Community Talk Story this Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016

The ‘Aiea/Pearl City area legislators are hosting an open community talk story this Thursday, October 20th at 7pm at Pearl Ridge Elementary School’s cafeteria. Area residents are welcome to come for a night of open, candid discussion. Come share your wisdom and ask questions directly to the government officials working on issues of concern.

The following officials will be present at the meeting:

  • Ford Fuchigami, Director of the State Department of Transportation
  • Mark Garrity, Acting Director of the City Department of Transportation Services
  • Scott Morishige, State Homelessness Coordinator
  • Michael Formby, Acting Director of the Honolulu Rail Transit Project

Traffic Alert for Kamehameha Highway from Moanalua Freeway offramp to Honomanu Street

Kamehameha Highway closure on Tuesday, Sept. 20 to Wednesday, Sept. 21st, 2016 from pm to 9am

Hawaiian Electric Company crews will be installing joint-use poles along Kamehameha Highway from westbound Moanalua Freeway off-ramp to Honomanu Street on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 to Wednesday, September 21st for the Honolulu Rail Transit Project’s utility infrastructure work in the area.

For the safety of work crews and the public, all westbound lanes and the sidewalk along Kamehameha Highway between the Moanalua off-ramp through Honomanu Street will be closed between 9pm on Tuesday, September 20th until 9am on Wednesday, September 21st. All westbound traffic will be detoured north via Aiea Access Road, west via Moanalua Road, and south to Honomanu Street (see below).

Aiea-Pearl City College Preparation Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 22

With school back in full swing, the Aiea-Pearl City legislators are hosting a town meeting to provide information and materials to parents of students that are preparing to attend college.

  • Date: Thursday, September 22, 2016
  • Time: 7-8:30 pm
  • Location: Pearlridge Elementary School

This meeting will cover important topics for prospective college students and will feature high school college counselors to answer any questions parents may have regarding preparing students for college. The counselors will also share tips for applying for financial aid, recommended coursework for students, navigating the college admissions process, and more. This is recommended for high school students and their parents!

This meeting is a part of the monthly Aiea-Pearl City town hall series sponsored by our local area (Pearl City/Aiea) legislators, and is being coordinated by Representative Roy Takumi’s office. You can contact Rep. Takumi’s office at 586-6170. Other sponsoring legislators include: Senators Donna Mercado Kim and Breene Harimoto; Representatives Aaron Ling Johanson, Sam Kong, and Gregg Takayama; and Councilmembers Carol Fukunaga and Brandon Elefante.

Applications to Participate in the ‘Aiea Christmas Parade & Fun Fair

The annual Aiea Community Christmas Parade and Fun Fair is a great event that celebrates the holiday season. We would like to extend an invitation to participate in the annual event in Aiea. This will be the 10th year for this holiday event. It will be held on Saturday December 10, 2016. The parade starts at 9am from Pearlridge Elementary School and ends at the Old Sugar Mill Site on Halewiliko Street.

The Aiea Christmas Parade and Fun Fair is sponsored and funded by the Aiea Community Association which is an IRS designated 501(c) 3 organization. Donations can be made to the Aiea Community Association to help defray costs of the event.

Volunteers Needed for ‘Aiea Gateway Clean-up on July 16th

Volunteers are needed for a clean-up of the iconic ‘Aiea Gateway on Saturday, July 16th from 8am to 2pm! This clean-up is a project of Eagle Scout Evan Suzuki of Alvah A Scott Elementary, Troop 147. Lunch will be served!

(For those unfamiliar with the ‘Aiea Gateway, it is at the corner of ‘Aiea Access Road and Moanalua Road, right across the street from St. Elizabeth School.)

‘Aiea/Pearl City Town Hall on Disaster Preparedness/Awareness

Everyone is invited to a ‘Aiea/Pearl City Town Hall meeting this evening (Thurs., May 19) from 7-8:30pm at Pearlridge Elementary School! The topic is on DISASTER PREAREDNESS/AWARENESS and will discuss potential natural disasters that could threaten ‘Aiea and Pearl City and what steps you can take to ensure the safety of our senior citizens in the event of a natural disaster. For example, what steps should you take to account for special needs like medication requirements or mobility constraints? Great opportunity for those caring for our kupuna.

Mahalo to the Pearl Ridge Estates Community Association!

A BIG mahalo is in order to the Pearl Ridge Estates Community Association for their very generous donation of almost $4,000 to the Friends of ‘Aiea Library! This donation will go very far in helping the Friends in their mission to support the ‘Aiea Library and its services, resources, and programs! It is VERY much appreciated!

Mahalo also to State Representative Sam Satoru Kong for facilitating this donation and ensuring everything went smoothly!
