Over the past several years, Arlene Ching, the former branch manager of ‘Aiea Public Library, tirelessly spent countless hours interviewing long-time current and former ‘Aiea residents. The fruits of this labor can be found in ‘Aiea: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow, a compilation of these oral histories and other historical resources.

Last year, Councilman Breene Harimoto and the City & County of Honolulu helped sponsor a “Complete Streets” workshop in ‘Aiea to look at how to make ‘Aiea’s streets safer, more livable, and more accessible. A “Complete Streets Honolulu” publication was released, showing its recommendations for ‘Aiea, which were derived in part from last year’s workshops. You can download the ‘Aiea portion of the “Complete Streets” recommendation here.

In March, the City’s Department of Transportation Services will begin implementing a Complete Streets demonstration project in Aiea.  This demonstration project, which will be along Ulune Street from Aiea Heights Drive to Kaamilo Street, is the product of informational workshops, community walk audits, and resident input provided at meetings held in 2012 and 2013.

And once again, Christmas is right around the corner!

This year, the ‘Aiea Community Association is proud to again sponsor our annual Christmas Parade & Fun Fair! It will take place on Saturday, December 14th. The parade will start at 9am at Pearlridge Elementary School. The route will run along Moanalua Road to Kaamilo Street, then mauka to ‘Ulune Street, then on to the old ‘Aiea Sugar Mill site. But that’s not all! After the parade is over, stay for the ‘Aiea Community Fun Fair until 2pm!

Do you have a group that wants to walk (or drive) in the parade? Want to set up a booth, entertain, or otherwise participate in the Fun Fair? It’s not too late–just download the forms below, fill them out, and send them to the e-mail address or mailing address listed! Deadline to apply is November 30, 2013.

Want to see and give input on the rail station designs being proposed for Pearl Harbor Naval Base Station, Lagoon Drive Station, and Middle Street Station? Well, a community information meeting to discuss just that will be held on Thursday, November 21 at the Moanalua High School Cafeteria. Registration is at 6 p.m. and the meeting is scheduled to run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Two quick library-related announcements:

1. Come to a FREE showing of Iron Man 3 on Thursday, October 10^th at 5:00 P.M.  Tony Stark is defeated by the ominous Mandarin and must find a way to rebuild himself and his Iron Man armor to end the villain’s path of destruction.  Superhero fun for the whole family.  Remember, the movie starts at 5:00 P.M. so come early for the best seats!
   
2. The Friends of Aiea Library are having a meeting on October 21st at 6:00 pm before our regularly-scheduled ACA meeting that night at 7:00 pm. See you there!
