Due to coronavirus concerns, the Hawaii Public Library System has canceled all uses of library meeting rooms through the end of March.
Accordingly, the ACA meeting that was scheduled for tonight has been cancelled. In addition, the Friends of ‘Aiea Library Booksale that was scheduled for March 28 is being postponed.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please stay healthy and continue to follow recommendations from the appropriate government authorities to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM — As part of the established and coordinated process agreed to in the Administrative Order on Consent in 2015, the Navy and Defense Logistics Agency will host a public information meeting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 15, along with their AOC partners, the state Department of Health and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
This meeting at the Oahu Veterans Center, 1298 Kukila Street, Honolulu, will provide an opportunity for the public to learn about improvements and investments at the Red Hill facility and ask questions of engineers and experts from the Navy, EPA and Department of Health who are responsible for various aspects of the AOC.
Media interested in attending the public meeting need to call the Navy Region Hawaii Public Affairs Office at 473-0662 by noon on Tuesday, Oct.15.

The ‘Aiea Community Association invites members of the ‘Aiea community (and our neighboring communities too!) to celebrate the holiday season by participating in our annual ‘Aiea Community Christmas Parade and Fun Fair on Saturday, December 14, 2019! Now in its 14th year, this event consists of a parade that departs from Pearlridge Elementary School/Pearlridge Community Park at 9am and ends at the old Sugar Mill site on Halewiliko Street next to ‘Aiea Public Library, passing by Pearlridge Center and ‘Aiea High School along the way. A family-friendly Fun Fair will follow at approximately 10am at the old Sugar Mill site with games, entertainment, food, and bouncers.
We are looking for groups to march in the parade, as well as any group that wants to participate in the fair, whether it’s by selling crafts, selling food, offering activities for our keiki (and adults!), provide entertainment, or offer information for our community.

EAH Housing, in response to a Request for Proposals from the City and County of Honolulu, has proposed the construction of a senior housing facility at the site of the former ‘Aiea Sugar Mill — specifically, the upper lot mauka of the library.
EAH graciously shared some of their concept art and potential site plan with the ‘Aiea Community Association. You can click on each image to view a larger version.

Councilmember Brandon Elefante is sponsoring a transit-oriented development community meeting for ‘Aiea and Pearl City on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Lehua Elementary School’s cafeteria (791 Lehua Avenue, Pearl City). Sign-in begins at 6:00 pm; the meeting will run from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Light refreshments will be provided.
The meeting will have the latest proposals for the ‘Aiea-Pearl City area showing which areas will have new, updated zoning.
The Department of Planning and Permitting’s Community Building and Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Administrator, Harrison Rue, will show the community how the areas around the new rail stations will be revitalized with new opportunities for housing and mixed-use development. TOD will enable people to live closer to the rail stations, increase the affordable housing stock, and help landowners to redevelop their parcels.

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transit will present an informational community update on the Honolulu Rail Transit Project. The public is welcome to attend and learn up-to-date details from project experts, view informational displays, and ask questions of HART representatives.
Get your complimentary HOLO card for Adults at the event (while supplies last) between 6:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The HOLO card is Honolulu’s first electronic transit payment card for use on TheBus and the future rail system.

Pat Lee from HART graciously sent over some information regarding the proposed train station names for the Honolulu Rail Transit Project. The station names reflect forgotten place names, historic events, and significant sites in Hawaiian culture. It is hoped that the names will perpetuate the traditions, culture, and history of Hawaiʻi and help knit the rail system into the fabric of Oʻahu. The station names were recommended by HART’s Hawaiian Station Naming Working Group, whose members used diverse community knowledge, oral accounts, and written history to come up with the names. The ‘Aiea Public Library will be celebrating its 5th anniversary (that is, the 5th anniversary of the library’s new location at 99-374 Pohai Place) on Saturday, July 13 from 10am to 4pm. To celebrate, the library will be holding a Mini Comic Con and refreshments. Learn how to draw using shapes, watch a Saber Academy demonstration, participate in a cosplay parade, and more!
On the following Saturday, July 20, 2019 from 10am to 3pm, the Friends of the ‘Aiea Library will be holding its semiannual used book sale at the ‘Aiea Public Library’s program room. Come down for a variety of cheap books and other media! All proceeds will go to support the valuable programs offered by the ‘Aiea Public Library.
